The Washington Nationals finally stopped a long skid by manufacturing a late rally, and the method matters more than the relief. The Los Angeles Angels bring another unsettled late-inning map to the series finale.
Nationals have the right tools for traffic
The Nationals ended a seven-game slide Friday by drawing a late walk, creating movement and forcing the Angels to make plays under pressure. That patient, contact-first approach fits this matchup better than waiting around for one large swing.
The MLB probable-pitcher page lists Jake Irvin opposite Rodriguez. Irvin struggled early in his previous outing but adjusted, kept the game within reach and showed that his workload is no longer being tightly restricted following his shoulder absence.
James Wood, CJ Abrams, Daylen Lile and Jorbit Vivas allow the Nationals to build a left-handed core against a right-handed starter. Wood supplies the barrel damage, while Abrams and Lile can pull mistakes and add pressure with their legs.
Catcher Harry Ford remains the main injury concern after leaving Friday with left hand and wrist discomfort, as MLB reported. Keibert Ruiz is the logical replacement, though Ford’s possible absence would leave the bench and running-game defense thinner.
Rodriguez must find the top rail again
Grayson Rodriguez is listed to start for the Angels after a rougher turn in Boston. His fastball still had life, but too many four-seamers stayed at barrel height and his command created traffic rather than quick outs.
Rodriguez had shown better strike-zone aggression in late August, so the underlying arm is not the concern. The question is whether he can restore separation between the elevated heater and secondary pitches below the zone before the Nationals settle into patient at-bats.
The Angels’ relief structure offers little margin behind an inefficient start. Samy Natera Jr. surrendered Friday’s decisive rally, Ben Joyce was not used, and the deadline departures of several veterans left a younger evaluation bullpen without a fixed closer.
Mike Trout and Zach Neto remain the primary right-handed threats against Irvin, while Moisés Ballesteros adds a developing left-handed bat. The Angels, however, have recently alternated isolated bursts with quiet stretches, which makes their side less useful than the cleaner Nationals scoring angle.
Hot air, open grass and getaway-day decisions
First pitch at Nationals Park is scheduled for 1:35 PM ET, with temperatures around the mid-80s after possible morning rain. The game-time rain risk is low, and warmer afternoon air should give properly struck fly balls a little more carry.
The park is broadly neutral, but its outfield gaps reward line drives and aggressive baserunning. The Angels also face a cross-country trip before Monday’s home opener, a getaway-day detail that can encourage catcher rotation and quicker hooks when a pitcher begins laboring.
Five Nationals runs is the cleaner target
The Nationals can make Rodriguez show his secondary pitches for strikes rather than chase them below the zone. If his fastball location remains loose, their left-handed stack has enough pull power to punish mistakes and enough speed to turn walks and singles into larger innings.
That pressure does not end with Rodriguez. An early hook would expose an Angels bullpen whose leverage assignments remain fluid, and Friday showed how quickly a walk, a bunt and aggressive running can loosen the bolts.
Rodriguez rediscovering his late-August command is the clearest risk, while Saturday’s bullpen usage could improve the Angels’ available relief mix. Even so, the Nationals team total isolates the favorable matchup without requiring their own injury-thinned bullpen to protect a lead.
