Reds have the arm, but the pitching script is torn up
Chase Burns is listed to start, with Cincinnati again planning to limit him to roughly three innings regardless of performance. Terry Francona told mlb.com that Burns should pitch at full intensity before the staff takes the ball from him.
That plan normally came with Brandon Williamson working bulk innings, but he handled an extended relief assignment Thursday and is unlikely to repeat it. Luis Mey also carries recent mileage, leaving the Reds to assemble most of Friday’s game without their intended bridge.
Julian Aguiar, a starter by background returning from Tommy John rehabilitation, was recalled in Friday’s mlb.com transactions. He is a logical bulk option, but Cincinnati had not formally announced that role.
The lineup remains dangerous in bursts. Sal Stewart has supplied the steadiest recent middle-order contact, while Elly De La Cruz can change an inning with his power or legs, but the Reds have alternated those flashes with long quiet stretches.
Cincinnati is out of the postseason race and using the closing schedule to evaluate younger players. Spoiler value is real, but roster development and Burns’ controlled workload are shaping the pitching decisions.
Cubs bring rested arms and a lineup seeing the ball cleanly
Clay Holmes is listed to start on five days’ rest and is stretched out for a conventional workload. His sinker can keep the ball off the compact park’s inviting outfield walls, although an elevated cutter remains the pitch Cincinnati can punish.
Dansby Swanson is back in the listed alignment after his oblique absence, as reflected in the latest mlb.com roster update. Moving Nico Hoerner back to second restores the preferred middle-infield defense behind a ground-ball starter.
Pete Crow-Armstrong enters after driving both premium fastballs and offspeed pitches, not merely waiting for one favorite mistake. Alex Bregman has also provided hard contact, while Michael Busch, Ian Happ and Michael Conforto give the Cubs several left-handed looks once Burns exits.
The Cubs had Thursday off, so their leverage arms do not carry back-to-back usage into the opener. The ninth inning remains unsettled, but Chicago has several rested choices rather than one exhausted solution.
Chicago’s division path has effectively closed, leaving the Cubs focused on protecting their position in a tight National League wild-card race. The incentive is plain: secure the strongest possible first-round setting and avoid giving away games against eliminated clubs.
A small park, warm air and no weather escape hatch
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET at Great American Ball Park, with temperatures in the upper 70s before cooling. Rain risk is low, and the wind is not expected to provide an extreme push toward the fences.
The park still rewards lifted contact to either corner, especially when pitchers fall behind and must enter the middle of the zone. This is the opener of a three-game series, so Cincinnati would prefer not to empty an already taxed bullpen on Friday night.
Once Burns leaves, the Cubs get the matchup they need
Burns can miss bats with his fastball-slider pairing and may keep Chicago quiet during his abbreviated assignment. The wager turns on the much longer portion of the game after he departs.
Williamson’s Thursday workload broke the intended piggyback plan, Mey is limited, and the probable replacement arrangement remains unconfirmed. That leaves a patient Cubs lineup facing an improvised, rest-disadvantaged chain in a park where one elevated mistake can become two runs in a hurry.
Chicago’s team total also isolates the cleanest part of the matchup. Holmes’ performance and the Cubs’ unsettled closer hierarchy matter far less here than Cincinnati finding enough credible innings behind Burns.
The principal risk is Burns banking several clean innings before the replacement bulk arm settles immediately. His workload is short, but his stuff is capable of making that short window count.
