Two very different routes into this week

Cirstea comes in with a light competitive schedule since Wimbledon and one useful piece of evidence: her win over Bartunkova in Cincinnati was controlled and noticeably cleaner than anything she managed in Toronto. At 36, with modest hard-court mileage this summer, the rust coming off in time is the whole question.
The second serve decides this one
Cirstea stands close to the baseline and punishes a short second ball immediately with the flat forehand. That is the least convenient opponent for a player whose delivery is currently a liability, and it shortens rallies before Kalinskaya can find her counterpunching rhythm. Their earlier hard-court meetings followed exactly that pattern.
The -0.5 handicap is effectively the same outcome as a straight win at a better number, and the awkward scenario of winning the match while losing the games count would require a set handed over cheaply plus two tiebreaks scraped. The genuine risk is Kalinskaya's ceiling, which tends to appear only once a match has already turned into a crisis.
